Some foods form the perfect marriage: bread and butter, peanut butter and jelly…but chicken and waffl es? It’s not a bad joke -- it’s Roscoe’s.

Roscoe’s House of Chicken ‘n Waffles is a Southern California-based soul food restaurant chain founded in 1976 by Herb Hudson, a Harlem, N.Y. native. Legend has it that the original location began serving their trademark combination to cater to late night/ early-morning diners, some of whom wanted both dinner and breakfast in the same meal.

This was my first visit to the small, L.A. institution immortalized in flicks like “Swingers” and “Pulp Fiction.” My salivary glands burst into overdrive the minute I walked through the door and the rich smell of fried chicken flooded my quivering nostrils. After a quick chat with the waitress, I ordered the house specialty — chicken and waffles, of
course.

The chicken came crispy on the outside with a flavorful crust that stuck firmly to the juicy meat within. The waffles were reminiscent of good ‘ole Eggos; fluffy and slightly sweet. While strange sounding, the combination was euphoria in my mouth. Sweet and savory flavors mixed together to create something new, something different. Add a side of red beans, collard greens, macaroni and cheese, biscuits or sweet potato pie to the meal and you got yourself a down-home feast.
