I want first to thank all of you who supported my “elliptathon” for public interest. My calves were quite sore for several days, but it was all in the name of a very good cause! I was glad to play a small role in the great effort organized by remarkable student leaders.
I will take advantage of this opportunity to write about a few of the activities that we are engaged in at the moment. There are many other activities to discuss, but these are a few highlights.
We are in full recruiting season, so you will see a number of applicants for faculty positions coming through. They meet with faculty, students, and staff, and they also give a “job talk” to demonstrate their speaking ability and provide an indication of their scholarly interests. Students are welcome to attend the talks, meet with the candidates, and provide thei  input into the process. We have outstanding applicants from all over the country, and I hope to show the best ones why S  is the place to be.
Led by the Curriculum Committee chair, Associate Dean Christopher Cameron, we are looking very seriously at the upper level curriculum, with input from students who serve on the Committee. We think we have been successful with the new first year, and our innovations have received national recognition, including an invitation to be one of the ten schools nationally attending the Carnegie Endowment’s upcoming conference in Palo Alto, but we think we can also do some novel and interesting things with the upper level program.
This ambition also fits the aims of another committee, led by Professor Byron Stier, focused on how to strengthen the overall student experience in the second year and its equivalent for part-time students. Stay tuned for some interesting new ideas and programs!
Externally, I am continuing to visit individual alumni to build relationships and bring in resources for the law school, and I am also attending receptions in the L.A. area and beyond to build alumni spirit and networking. This year we have come close to doubling attendance from last year, which was already much greater than the year before.
And don’t forget to take advantage of the alumni-student networking opportunities that we will continue to have on campus. We know we still have a ways to go, but our community is getting stronger and stronger!
