March 2008

Elections for the 2008-2009 Student Bar Association (SBA) Executive Board will take place on April 17-18.  The available positions are: President, Day Vice President, Evening Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and ABA Representative.

During the days preceding the elections, each candidate will be feverishly campaigning, as an individual or as a slate, in hopes of convincing the SW student body that he or she is the most qualified candidate to lead our law school next year.  It is an exciting time—and let me tell you from personal experience, running for a Board position is well worth it.

Every year the SBA organizes a host of social and networking events for the student body.  In fact, the SBA is responsible for most of the organized events that occur at SW.  A successful SBA event truly enhances student life at Southwestern.

However, the responsibility of an SBA board position is not for everyone.  It is reserved for those who can lead, manage and inspire the student body while enduring the rigors of law school.  If you think that you are this kind of individual, I highly encourage you to run.

Being a member of the SBA Board also offers you privileges.

Perhaps the first time I realized that my position as SBA President this past year was valuable to my legal career was when my resume was forwarded to a young associate at a prestigious L.A. law firm.  The associate emailed me back and wanted me to stop by the office for a meeting.  The first thing he said to me at the meeting was that he too was SBA president of his law school.

My position on SBA has not only opened up doors for me and provided me with something to talk about during an interview, but it has given me the opportunity to meet and work with many of the bright and dynamic students, professors and administrators at SW.

Long after I graduate and look back at my law school career, I am confident that my experience serving on the SBA Board will be one of my fondest memories of SW.  And while I am sad to see my term as SBA President come to an end at the close of this semester, I look forward to watching the SBA evolve as I pass the gavel down to next year’s Board.
